Doesn't lay right for my opinion

Doesn't lay right on my head like the picture. It stands straight up and doesn't flop down like it should. Can't wear it out. Should it be laundered to soften it up?

I had to wash the hat upon arrival. It had a really bad smell, probably because it came wrapped in plastic. But I love the hat after a good wash.
