Review on πŸ’Ύ HGST Travelstar 2.5-Inch 750GB Internal Hard Drive 7200 RPM SATA II 16 MB Cache (0S03339) [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging] by Justin Goff

Noise when switching off and no software support.

I like it, but I have problems. This drive isn't as powerful as the Western Digital 7200 RPM laptops I've had in the past. However, its thickness is 7mm, which is required for new laptops. In terms of performance, it doesn't appear to be any faster than the 5400 rpm drive it replaced. The Windows score for the hard disk also remained the same. It hasn't increased. Every time I turn off my laptop or put it to sleep, the drive makes a very loud grinding noise as it spins and the head parks. I can't imagine such a noise being good for a mechanical device, but my drive hasn't failed in a month. This is an extended format disc. This requires an operating system compatible with advanced formats, such as Windows 7 and Windows 8. Experienced users who want to clone their old hard drive to a new HGST will be disappointed to find that unlike Western Digital and Seagate, there are no cloning tools and Backing Up Drives are available for free download from HGST. Their website just says "Buy Acronis True Image" to clone old drive to new HGST drive. At the time of writing, Acronis True Image cost the same as this drive currently costs. Since this software comes bundled with Western Digital and Seagate hard drives, it renders this hard drive unusable for people who need to clone it. So, advanced users who need cloning software to transfer data from old drive to new one and don't want to buy Acronis True Image should turn to Seagate or Western Digital. I'm concerned about the durability of the disc because of the noise it makes. I regularly back up my data and have created a system image in Windows 7 so I can restore my laptop to a new drive if needed. I was hoping for the same experience as when I upgraded my last laptop to 7200rpm. Drive out of the drive at 5400 rpm. Increased performance and increased Windows score. With this HGST, all increases were so small that I can't see them, and neither can Windows 7.

Pros
  • 7200 rpm high performance hard drive
Cons
  • Some little things
