I am shocked that so few cars today have front and rear tow hooks. That makes it difficult to get a car out of a snowdrift in the New England winter. Or out of the ditch when driving off-road. This is where the axel strap comes into play. And this does not only apply to axles, which are not always available. As a last resort (although not the best course of action), the strap can be wrapped around a frame member or threaded between the spokes of a wheel without scratching like a chain. I used a Keeper (04226) 24" x 2" premium axle. straps and similar products for these purposes. I keep one in the trunk of both of my SUVs along with a 16ft tow strap. Straps cost less than a tow truck and can be reused. And I like helping people out of difficult situations.
