Review on StarTech.com 2 Port Dual Monitor DisplayPort KVM Switch with USB 2.0 Hub, Audio, and Microphone - Black (SV231DPDDUA) by Gabriel Salleh

Revainrating 4 out of 5

I have had two VGA DualView GCS1742's from IOGEAR over the years and both have worked flawlessly. However,

KVM are known, I had two VGA DualView GCS1742 from IOGEAR and both worked fine. However, with new monitors and quality I didn't want to use a switched VGA output on mine as all my new monitors have both Displayport and HDMI inputs and I couldn't sacrifice quality and I donated my IoGear device to charity. After reading product reviews here and online, I have questioned StarTech's Dual Head Unit - to a degree. KVMs, no matter who makes them, are not perfect creatures and require careful attention to detail when setting them up. The unit comes without a manual which is good as there was a link to the online manual and StarTech has responsive online chat/tech support so while the manual is good the document is worth the money and I'd rather not would pay more for it given the high cost of DP and HDMI KVM on the market. After having all the necessary wiring, I installed everything by turning off the power, and after that there was almost no problem - now, a week later. You will need two USB 2.0 cables - A male to B male back to both PCs. Since I have three mice, one for my office machine that my wife uses, and a trackball and video editing shuttle that I use, I was concerned about the need to swap cables on the fly. As it turns out, using a powered USB port connected to the KVM mouse port has worked well so far when switching between computers. I have a third monitor (coming out of the DVI port on my EVGA 1080) for my editing and typicality system. to use both as a playback monitor and as software to monitor my GPU and I do notice that when switching back between computer A and B the monitor program window reverts to one of my main monitors, but if that's a problem then there's nothing to complain about. I'm currently not using sound over KVM, so I can't comment on this feature. Yes the box itself is more of a kit box which I did a project with a year ago where prototyping electronics and of course a prettier box would be more aesthetically pleasing but there are no rough edges here and it all works - of course it also reduces the cost. As advertised, I have had good experiences with it. I also received an email response the next day asking if my issue was resolved. I credit this good customer service and recommend just follow the online instructions and report back if your system is having problems.
