I received my sheets and put them in the washing machine as instructed before layering them over my clothes. When I pulled the sheets out of the dryer, there were hooks on every part. I also bought a matching duvet for this bedding set from the same company and had the same problem. The problem wasn't with my washing machine as all the other washes I did that day were fine and all my clothes were undamaged. I can't be sure if the driftwood was there before the washing process because I didn't inspect it carefully as I assumed it arrived in pristine condition. In any case, they either came to me in extremely damaged condition or didn't even survive a gentle wash before deteriorating.
