My 15 year old cat has had increasing gastrointestinal problems for a number of years. He developed a poultry allergy 3 years ago which results in severe diarrhea within 30 minutes of eating any type of poultry (eggs don't seem to bother him). Back then, it was difficult to find dry cat food that was only fish (it won't mix wet food, even canned fish). More and more companies are only producing fish food, as poultry allergies in cats have become more common. He started vomiting most of his food right after eating it for the last year, which increased to the point where he had lost 2 pounds in the last 6 months. He was fed up with every food I tried. He asked for food but couldn't resist. At that time, a visit to the vet was announced. All of his lab tests were normal. The vet believes he has inflammatory bowel disease that slowly progresses over time. Maybe he even has a little pancreatitis. He was started on B-12 injections weekly x 6 weeks and then monthly. He was also started on 5 mg prednisolone daily (cats cannot take prednisolone) with excellent results. The vomiting stopped completely as long as I gave him medication every day and kept him on the same diet. He gained a pound in the first month of the medication. He will continue on the drug for another 3 months and then the vet will reassess if he can be weaned off the drug. I stopped reducing the dose of the drug because the vomiting returned within 12 hours of reducing the dose. Unfortunately, the only dried fish food he ate and could tolerate was Wellness Ocean Core dog food. (Dried fish dog food is readily available compared to cat food. There are only about 6-8 varieties of pure fish kibble for cats and he either won't eat or can tolerate at least half of them.) He ate cat food. Dogs . For 6 months because every time I tried to switch him to cat food he would either not eat it or throw up again even though he was still on meds. This special dog food contains taurine, which is essential for cats. I gave up looking for cat food that he could eat and tolerate. I tried this food hoping he would tolerate it. There's some chicken liver in there, but I was hoping it wouldn't be enough to bother him. I mixed the food with his old food in a ratio of 50%. He chose this cat food instead of the dog food he ate. He ate over 6 hours ago and still no problem. These are very small pieces, which is good because it's easier for him to eat and digest. I hope that he will continue to eat this food and tolerate it without any gastrointestinal problems. The food smells awful, but most fish dishes smell pretty bad. I can handle the smell while he's eating it and I can endure it without throwing up. It doesn't smell as bad as the EVO herring feed that made half the house stink when I fed it. This food gave him diarrhea and he also vomited. The last cat food I tried (Taste of the Wild) he ate very well but within 10 minutes he vomited immediately. He will not touch Salmon's Wellness formula or Salmon & Pea's Natural Balance formula. He ate the Natural Balance Rabbit & Salmon formula (hard to find), but also vomited it up. Last time I checked, the formula was changed to include a bird. He loves and tolerates the Nature Instinct Variety Salmon formula just fine, but will puke at least half the time. He ate this food when he lost 2 pounds in 6 months. I really hope this food works as I have tried literally every all fish dry cat food available. So far it looks promising!
