I will follow the Lightroom catalogs and retouches.

This review is written from the perspective of professional photographers using the Lightroom cataloger/retoucher while traveling with the Surface Pro 4. The device we bought is the latest iteration of their portable solid state drive and is slightly more expensive than the other device we tested, the Samsung T5. The WD unit is a bit smaller and lighter, but not by much. Aside from the price, the main difference is that the latest version of the WD drive offers USB Type-C and USB 3.1 Gen 2 support, as well as a Type-C cable with Type-C connectors on both ends. But it also includes an adapter for the Surface Pro 4's standard USB 3.0 port. Read and write times are about four times faster than our previous hard drive, and it rivals Lightroom to a point I can't judge can be the real difference between using an internal or external (WD) SSD. Read and write times run in the 400Mbps range without hiccups. One thing I noticed is that the case gets warm under heavy use, but it's only warm to the touch. Not hot at all. The device itself looks well put together but I recommend getting a case for it as it's so small and light I'm afraid of losing it! In summary, if you need a portable external storage solution with fast read and write times, it's worth investing in a WD My Passport SSD.

Pros
  • External SSDs
Cons
  • A newer model could have been chosen
