This is not for a 3 1/2 year old. You need constant help to use it. Finally figured out how to get the crank working by inserting the top into the 2 white tabs on the back of the base and then pushing the top down to hook them together. The device for making "logs" is dirty, and it is difficult for a small child to open it and connect the insides to make another "log". Also, the toy doesn't fit back in the box. When I played alone my child lost interest after about 10 minutes because he was so frustrated playing with him when I couldn't sit and help him.
