Review on Logitech Wireless Speaker Z515 for Laptops, iPad, and iPhone: Powerful Portable Sound by Haley Johnson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Nice unit though. suitable for portable Bluetooth speakers

The device itself is not bad, the sound is not the best, but more than adequate. My big problem is the power supply, the plug and how the device handles it. The power supply uses the ubiquitous barrel connector, probably 1/4 inch. Half the devices I use have power adapters with a plug that's about the same size, and therein lies the problem. Some of these power supplies use a different polarity, meaning the current flows in the opposite direction, and for some reason almost none of them label the consumable case itself (Logitech certainly doesn't label theirs). Somehow I managed to connect the power supply with the wrong polarity and apparently Logitech doesn't use a protection diode to prevent reverse current from blowing the device's circuitry. The device can no longer be switched on. In the future I'll be on the lookout for companies that use USB (obviously a large standard plug) to power and charge the device as polarity issues are almost impossible. There's only one - you can't screw it up. After all, a company like Logitec should know better than not to protect the device from the possibility of such a thing. A $0.10 diode would save $80 in hardware.

Pros
  • Expensive, but decent
Cons
  • approx.
