Good item, these are not a hard wire product, they will need to be plugged into an outlet, so just remember that when building your island or countertop and there won't be any unpleasant surprises. It does lay pretty flush with the countertop. It's an easy install. The countertop debt will not be a problem whatever it is. It allows as much as a 4" depth. Now on to the negative. I can see this as a possible problem if you spill something liquid around it. It is not water tight, so the liquid will run down inside the rod which contains the outlets. It is NOT an automatic push button pop-up. You have to pull it up and it's rather hard to pull. All in all, I would still recommend this product for the price. All top components are plastic
