Review on πŸ”Œ Hughes Autoformers PWD30-EPO: Spike Power Watchdog with 30 Amp Shut Off - Enhanced Protection for Your RV by Jesse Gray

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Without two major disadvantages it would have been 5 stars.

We recently bought this unit and haven't picked it up yet. At the moment it is attached to our RV in the backyard. As others have pointed out, it's larger than expected. It is well made and appears to be durable. The app was easy enough to set up on our S20 smartphones. The display is easy to read and straight ahead. We are confident that it will do the job it was designed to do. When we do our first Snowbird ride this winter we will update the review. There are many great products that should be rated 5 stars, except for one downside, two in this case, they get a 1 star rating. Unfortunately this is one of them. The Power Watchdog has a built-in light that illuminates the RV site. This makes the device clearly visible at night. You might as well put a flashing neon sign on it that says $200, STEAL ME. What were they thinking? I contacted the manufacturer about the problem with the light. They said they are working on dimming the lights. In the meantime they sent me a stencil to cover the light. Power Watchdog no longer lights up the RV spot. However, it's still bright enough to advertise its presence and attract unwanted attention. When I drive onto the street, I put a black plastic bag over it so it doesn't show. The second disadvantage is that many RV parks use a 30 amp 125 volt RV outlet that is gated, lockable, weatherproof, and NEMA TT electrical. Power strip -30R. The bulky Power Watchdog latch with its rigid handles prevents these drawers from closing completely. This removes weather protection and locking from the outlet. My Tiffin Wayfarer has a same size plug on the power cord, but it's articulated and pivots for easy closure.

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
  • Long delivery time
