This is a requirement for MacBook Pro 2016/2017.

This is a must have for MacBook Pro 2016/2017. I've connected everything from a USB Ethernet adapter to my external hard drive with no issues. I even have a Blu-Ray drive so I can record movies and I have my iPhone 7 connected too. It gets a bit warm and that's the only downside for me. My other laptop doesn't even have a micro SD slot, and this one has both a micro and standard slot. I was afraid to switch to a MacBook because of the USB-C ports, but this made the Windows to Mac transition 170% easier. I even keep another one to back up because I can't use another adapter if my first one breaks.
