Ideal for kayak and ice fishermen who want to mount it on a box and connect it to a battery. I would say it really is because of that. The wire is short, 2 meters to be exact. Automotive designs would like more, I imagine. The aluminum body was a surprise; but you will not be rejected! I'd say finding one with a power switch would be more ideal, but I'm sure an engineer could tell that it used next to nothing when idle. A thinker would also say that at some point the on/off button breaks. So maybe one with a button isn't the best solution. Last detail: at the ends of the wires there is a ring for attaching to the battery. The fish finder battery (12v, 6-12 amp) needs more square or alligator clip to bite. In my case I use this with a fish finder so the fish finder wiring has alligator clips to keep those wires where they need to be. Just thinking about it, those who don't have other components on the same battery might want to look for ways to attach the rings to the battery without nuts. I've included a photo of my sonar's alligator clips that hold the loading rings in place. Works for me, but maybe not for everyone.
