There's no point in putting flimsy glass in front of a good lens. You lose any benefit of good optics. Therefore, a haze filter has many uses: removing UV haze (haze that you may not see but blurring your landscape) and protecting your lens from fingerprints, dust, dirt and moisture. The +W filters are made of ground optical glass (Schott I think) which makes them optical rather than windowed. The filter ring is made of brass, which makes it easy to remove (these filters have very thin threads and can deform). I put it on my 70-250mm zoom lens which is my best lens and I want to protect it. It peels off easily - a valuable item if you are outside in fog. Some filters just smear when you try to clean them - the coating on this filter makes it easy to clean with a lens cleaning tissue.
