I am an Occupational Therapist and I work with children up to 3 years old. I bought this to develop various skills during class including the following: two-way hand coordination, fine motor skills, agility, hand manipulation, and hand-eye coordination. I couldn't be happier with this bead set. It helps me develop the above skills and I also like that the beads are NOT as heavy as the wooden beads. Toddlers tend to throw toys (mainly because they're learning about cause and effect). If they drop these beads (and I'm sure they will!), these beads won't hurt or do as much damage as heavy wooden beads. Definitely a toy for 5!
