Review on Maxxima Canless Recessed Downlight Integrated by Julian Davidson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

The lantern is solid but the spring is poorly designed

Everything about the lantern looks solid and well made. Plug connections facilitate connection. Lots of lumens for a 4 inch panel which is the main reason I bought it. However, the spring is poorly designed without much thought, making it difficult to mount it to the ceiling well. In the promotional video, it looks easier than it really is because the person isn't actually doing it on the ceiling. Most waffle lamps have a flat plastic end that presses against the underside of the drywall, also slipping out of the hole a bit when you put that Turn on the light and increase the downward tension on the spring to keep the light snug against the ceiling. Not in this case: the thin metal tip of the spring can bite into the drywall a little and stay where you put it and will not slide, creating less than the required spring tension and therefore a shaky light to read with a finger can be moved. This light is too heavy due to the J-Box on top, making it even more difficult to expand the spring arm after installation. I have access to the attic, although it hurts a bit to crawl to where there is light: I'll try to go up and increase the angle of the spring. I hope the manufacturer remakes the spring with a flat plastic base like other waffle lamps. I still give 4 stars because the performance is otherwise good.
