We have two of these (different colors) and the ballasts on BOTH blew out after 2-3 years. Fortunately ballasts are readily available so they CAN be repaired for relatively little cost - but what a royal torment and needlessly bad design. I'm an electrical engineer (retired) so out of curiosity I took apart both burned ballasts to see if I could find the problem. If you're familiar with electronics, you'll immediately recognize the smell of burnt electronics emanating from both. On removing the box I found on both ballasts an incompletely sealed electronics board (incomplete potting is not necessarily a problem) and an obviously burnt power transistor (or possibly a power IC packaged as a power transistor - potting prevented the ID). My experience is that one of two things happens: either the transistor (or power IC) just overheated, or it ran out of spec. Both reasons indicate bad design. Unfortunately the only replacement ballast I could find was of the same make and model so I expect more failures in the future - although the ballast manufacturer may have improved their product. I really hope so!
