We use these bulbs for our carp pond. It keeps the water nice and clear without the addition of chemicals. While you would normally expect this lamp to last about a year if left on all the time, you can turn off the lamp (and UV filter) when the water is below 50-55 degrees if you are in a more seasonal one living climate. In such cold weather, nothing should grow in the water anyway. Our Aqua UV Filter documentation also recommends using an original Aqua lamp. So that's another reason why we buy them, and not less expensive normal lamps.
