UPDATE 2 - September 2020 - MKE 600 and MKH 416 I recently received the new Sennheiser MKH 416 for my sound reinforcement projects and can now compare the two mics head-to-head. In my opinion, the MKE 600 is still the best microphone for speech output, despite the 416's long and colorful history. The 600 just has a smoother overall sound, especially at high frequencies. The 416 has a "big" sound but can easily get quite boomy and wheezy. The 600 doesn't have this problem thanks to a more forgiving EQ curve. For most VO talent I would prefer the MKE 600 over the 416 unless you have a client or studio that specifically requires the 416. The 600's battery option also means I can use it as a travel mic or for quick listening and reading out in studios. UPDATE 1 - November 2017 I have now used my MKE 600 to record hundreds of voiceovers for several well known American brands. This microphone is excellent in every way. I no longer use a high-pass filter, but speak into the microphone at an angle; This controls the explosive and also gives a fuller sound. The MKE 600 will remain my microphone of choice for the foreseeable future. ORIGINAL REVIEW I bought this mic for voiceover purposes. I couldn't find any reviews of the MKE 600 for speech output online, but decided to give it a try since its older brother, the MKH 416, is a mainstay of the speech output industry. Having recorded about a dozen demos with the MKE 600 I can say that this is the best microphone I have ever used for speaking. The pickup circuit is very tight - much more focused than I thought given it's a shorter gun mic. The off-axis noise reduction is very good. I personally find the frequency response of the MKE 600 outstanding. My voice is low and booming; and the high pass filter does a great job with that drone. The treble boost is also in a different place than on most condenser microphones. This amplifies around 7 kHz instead of 10 kHz, giving the microphone a softer sound with more presence. For those looking for a great voice over mic, especially those not working in a fully processed room, get the MKE 600.
