Children and pets come into the house all day. I've had industrial grade carpets like this that have lasted far longer than anything you can get from Target - easily ten years. But this one beats anything I've had in the past. It's been described as water retention and a scratchy effect, and based on my experience with this mat, that's certainly true. I don't know how to describe this scratching, but when you walk on it, the 3D pattern on the carpet moves as you walk with your shoes and really scratches the small parts of your shoes. Although I haven't had this rug in a while I'm sure it will last a long time just like the others I've had.
