Review on πŸ“Έ Canon MR-14EX Macro Ring Lite for Canon DSLR Cameras by Alex Jain

Revainrating 5 out of 5

A must have for close-up photography - updated 27th January 2011

The Canon MR-14EX was a great addition to my macro kit. It attaches quickly and easily to my compact 50mm macro lens and illuminates very large subjects that a regular on-camera flash can't reach, eliminating the need for off-camera flash. My only gripe is that the inner diameter of the ring is too small for larger diameter lenses (I often like to use my sharp Canon 24-70mm lens with macro rings for extreme macro photography). There is no easy way to attach the MR14EX to this lens. Sometimes I held it by hand, but that can cause the rig to shake during exposure. The ring is specifically designed for use with 50mm and 180mm macro lenses. However, the small diameter of the ring makes it possible to focus the light on smaller and closer objects. With a variety of selectable features on this flash, you can tailor the results to your specific macro shooting needs. The price is high, but if macro photography is an important part of your photographic repertoire, the MR14EX will greatly expand your creative options and produce amazing results. : You will see small brackets ( ) in each droplet - reflections from two flashbulbs. I've since upgraded my kit to include the Macro Twinlite (MT-24EX) and Canon's new 100mm IS Macro Hybrid lens - a dynamite combination. The ring is easier to attach, but the Twinlite is more versatile. Both items are expensive. The 100mm IS requires an adapter ring (another $40!) to mount any of the flashes.

Pros
  • Lightweight twin tube sewing ring
Cons
  • Out of style
