A must have for close-up photography - updated 27th January 2011

The Canon MR-14EX was a great addition to my macro kit. It attaches quickly and easily to my compact 50mm macro lens and illuminates very large subjects that a regular on-camera flash can't reach, eliminating the need for off-camera flash. My only gripe is that the inner diameter of the ring is too small for larger diameter lenses (I often like to use my sharp Canon 24-70mm lens with macro rings for extreme macro photography). There is no easy way to attach the MR14EX to this lens. Sometimes Iโ€ฆ

Very good close-up ring flash

The Canon MR-14EX Macro Ring Lite is a great close-up flash. As you can tell from the model number, it has a guide number of 14, which means it has an effective range of around 14 meters (or 46 feet). This is only slightly more powerful than the built-in flashes in Canon's budget SLRs (which have a guide number of 13) and significantly weaker than other Canon external flashes (with an effective range of 22m to 22m, which varies by model). 58 meters). I bought a Canon MR-14EX Macro Ring Lite to use with my Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro Lens USM To be used for Canon EOS 7D CMOS 18MP digital SLR camera. I hadn't really gotten into extreme macro photography before, so I thought I'd see if I could love them. So, as with most things that interest me, I went a little crazy and bought a bunch of gear, including a Canon MR-14EX Macro Ring Lite. Please note that I am an amateur photographer, so my perspective is presented from the perspective of anโ€ฆ

Essential accessory for serious close-up photographers

If you're serious about close-up or macro photography, sooner or later (but probably sooner) you'll need a light source to compensate for the drop in light transmission that occurs when the focus is on short distances. If you can't do all your macro shots outdoors in bright light, or if you don't have the luxury of using spotlights to create a macro scene, you'll need a flash or maybe even a main flash and a few slaves to light tricky macro scenes. The Canon MR-14EX is one of two macro flashโ€ฆ
