YONGNUO YN660 Speedlite: Versatile Wireless Manual Flash with GN66 Power for Canon Nikon Pentax Olympus Review

Bought on Aliexpress for $41 (unbelievable but true). In terms of price / quality ratio, this flash has no competitors. Intuitive and simple interface, screen with a nice amber backlight and large characters, built-in radio synchronizer compatible with Yongnuo RF-602, RF-603 II, leg with convenient clip instead of a washer, high pulse power, fast reload, 180 degree horizontal rotation round trip. Great option for a reasonable price.

This is a monster flash. Uses the same chassis as my flagship yn-685 ettl and hss. I use it as a receiver flash along with the RF-603II transceiver for my Canon DSLRs. It rarely fires and uses the battery wisely. Expect 400-450 flashes at 1/8 power. You're doing something wrong if you frequently need more than 1/8 the indoor power from that flash. If you are new to yn flash hardware, explore the yn-600 rt range instead.

I liked them at first but generally they disappointed me and gave me a big headache in the field. They just suddenly stop working and never work again. I have 3 of these and only 1 works. I need 2 to work for the work I do and I'm just so pissed that they just don't last long because they're great value for money and I LOVE the wireless functionality. But I'm just sad that I can't use them anymore. Hurts business.

These guys make great flashes. I can't understand why you spend so much on big manufacturers. I don't think there is a noticeable difference in quality. Bought two YN660s on first use, one flash stuck when fired at only 1/1 FULL power. I noticed this during the shoot when my pictures were completely overexposed and when I checked the flashes both were set at 1/32 power, one was firing at FULL power. I love these flashes! They're cheap, and with these YN660s that match the performance of the high-end GN66 flashes from Nikon and Canon, they're definitely worth trying. They work great with the YN560-TX flash trigger. Very glad I tested this before photographing property. After about 25 flashes using the Yongnuo 603 wireless triggers (which work well so far) this flash decided to stop on every shutter, even after every 5th flash cooling session. Care must be taken not to overheat the flash too much, but for the Yn660 this slight burn-in was too severe. The batteries were hot after 10 non-consecutive shots at 1/32 by the way. Not good. Excellent flash for its price. Compared to Youngnuo Mark III, these things are a lot bigger. That's not bad, but with the battery holder on the camera and that flash, it adds weight to the camera. Also, most pre-cut gels will not work. I run my 660s with YN560tx and they work great but they don't zoom to 105mm when running 560tx I don't care but if they come out with 660tx I will upgrade from 560tx. last thing. I bought one of these. I've used it for several shoots and by day 3 I noticed a burning smell. In fact, he lit my gel and melted the plastic that was blocking the light. Works fairly well with the limitations that third party flashes/triggers have anyway and you can't beat the price for the functionality.
