I bought a Canon MR-14EX Macro Ring Lite to use with my Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro Lens USM To be used for Canon EOS 7D CMOS 18MP digital SLR camera. I hadn't really gotten into extreme macro photography before, so I thought I'd see if I could love them. So, as with most things that interest me, I went a little crazy and bought a bunch of gear, including a Canon MR-14EX Macro Ring Lite. Please note that I am an amateur photographer, so my perspective is presented from the perspective of an enthusiast who just likes to go out and take as many great pictures as possible for fun, and not necessarily from a professional perspective. Observations: Even though the Canon 100mm macro has an f/2.8, you still need a lot of light to take good pictures without bumping up the ISO or slowing down the shutter speed to something that inevitably leads to blur leads. Image even when using a tripod. This Macro Ring Lite offers a fairly reliable solution to the problem. You might also want to invest in a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM macro lens as the L series comes with image stabilization and has great reviews, but there are many situations where I see the need for a macro ring even on a lens of the L series with IS . That and an L-series lens cost nearly $900. But this update will probably come in time. Until then, I will continue to use the Canon 100mm f2.8 USM Macro, which also performs very well. About the Canon MR-14EX Lite Macro Ring Pros: Good build with a heavy feel, especially the CordAA batteries make it easy to turn on Communication with the E-TTL camera Guide LEDs are very useful for quick focusing Takes good pictures without too much blurring of the others Very useful for close-up shots of inanimate objects Noise Makes your camera look amazing Cons: Adds a bit more overall weight when loaded with batteries Wish it would work with Canon batteries too (different results) Not ideal when Try it for spontaneous shots since there is so much fiddling around with the flash settings. Guide LEDs and noise seem to startle my small objects. like anoles and skinks, spiders and winged creatures. The exposure color tends to be too white (5400K) and Lite doesn't include filters for color compensation (but I'm a dirty scammer who loves PhotoShop and uses it shamelessly. I solve a lot of the filter issues in the post) but after using Flash for about a week, it has its undeniable advantages and works great in most situations in which I have used it. But there are a few flaws that hold the Canon MR-14EX Macro back. The Ring Lite form is a great addition to a macro photographer's arsenal. I would still highly recommend the Canon MR-14EX Macro Ring Lite to serious enthusiasts who don't mind spending a little time learning about its strengths and secrets.
