This is my second Blue Rhino SkeeterVac that I have purchased. The latter was a much older model, lasted at least 5 years and the basket was under a fan so the bugs (especially the blind and black stable flies) were smashed by the fan and then dropped into the basket. . It eventually clogged the fan, but I learned how to disassemble and clean the unit. This newer device has a basket in front of the fan so it will never meet the same fate. Instead, the bugs are caught in front of the fan. I never liked the potholder trap and still don't, but the potholder trap catches a lot of bugs. Replacing a tactical trap is expensive over time, but you can skip it just knowing you'll get fewer bugs. To run. You don't want to get too close to that thing or you'll get eaten alive. I'd say 50 feet is the minimum distance you should be away from it if it works. Further is better. The idea is that it attracts mosquitoes year-round, sucking them in and harming the local breeding population. This is not a quick fix! And the further you can place it away from people, the better for you! It certainly attracts mosquitoes and doesn't require electricity to work (it makes its own electricity from propane, very cool!), but the basket tends to clog easily with bugs. So empty more often. Daily is the best. Once there are enough bugs in the basket, it will simply stop vacuuming and will not pick up any more bugs. They include a basket lid so mosquitoes don't just fly away when you remove the basket. But here's what to do with a half-full basket of live mosquitoes! I've found that a quick blast of hot air from a hair dryer straight through the mesh of the basket will kill them in seconds. No chemicals required! Moths and other insects don't seem to suffer from this hot air method either, so bonus if you don't like killing other species. the same with this new block. Otherwise, a new cylinder will be needed every few weeks. 100lb tanks last 5x longer and cost about 2x more in my area. This route requires adapters and extension hoses, which are available from Revain. Most propane suppliers will rent you a 100 lb tank for free in exchange for prejudice. Some will even deliver! Look around. The device does what it says on the tin and definitely attracts mosquitoes better than anything I've seen. He's just a little weak to suck them up and destroy them. So on that front, I've found that pairing this device with a bug trap AT LEAST increases mosquito kill by 1000x! Hang a bug trap next to this thing and watch the carnage as the sun goes down! I used a FlowTron bug trap hanging from a shepherd's hook about 3 feet from the SkeeterVac and it definitely reduced the mosquito population after a week of operation.
