I have both GEN1 and CM2 of AKG-N700, I will compare them. this design). CM2 has stronger clamping force. The CM2 comes with a slightly thicker shell which gives the CM2 a much stronger head grip making the CM2 much more road/travel orientated. For long sitting sessions I prefer GEN-1. The GEN-1 has more cup room and the lower clamping force makes it unnecessarily comfortable on long sessions, although I know I had to hold my head up to drink water. The CM2 comes with a smaller cache package. Yes, the GEN-1 backpack is bulky and I can feel it in the backpack. However, I think the GEN-1 package is more premium and might protect the headset better. The CM2 cannot adjust the volume in wired ANC mode. This sucks for me. I'm playing Xbox on a gaming monitor and I'm using a 3.5mm monitor as the output. This jack is always at 100/100 volume, so I have to rely on the GEN-1 N700's volume controls to get a reasonable volume. I'm in the game I wonder if they adjusted it in CM2. My roommate, who has smaller ears, said she likes the CM2 more than the GEN-1, and as far as sound goes, I have blind faith in the AKG's tonal neutrality/accuracy. May this trust last for the next 100 years.
