Low Power, Flat Sound, First Shipment DOA

This unit was purchased to replace a 1990's Technics AV receiver that eventually failed. Being 20 years older and much less likely to listen to loud music, I figured I could do with less power output (this unit is rated at 65 watts per channel, but that doesn't mean the spec draws 6 watts). Ohm or 8 ohm speakers - 65 watts is less if 8 ohm speakers are used). My 8 ohm speakers sounded very flat and the usual background bass was completely missing. The Technics reference block was rated at 110 watts into 8 ohms. Also, the first Onkyo I received was defective - the USB connection didn't read anything (USB sticks or my Apple iTouch). The second connector worked in all respects, but I mention this comment as possible further support for the claim that Onkyo quality has dropped. My recommendation for AV receivers in this price range is to give the Sony STRDH540 a serious look. This is the device I finally settled on and am listening to right now. It delivers very good sound performance, the bass is present and powerful even at low volume, and the variety of sound sculpting options makes FM stereo, Pandora via my iTouch via USB connection or movie soundtracks interesting and entertaining.
