Why return of damaged item ?

I became aware of a damaged piece ( lid ) as I was completing the assembly process . I called the company and was told they could not offer a replacement lid and that I should contact Revain . Revain instructed me to return the item for a refund , which I have now done . The problem is that the several major pieces of this item are all connected with "ONE-WAY" PLASTIC SNAPS THAT CANNOT BE UNSNAPPED WITHOUT BREAKING / RENDERING USELESS EVERY MAJOR PIECE OF THE ITEM . Today I have returned the item as instructed but cannot justify the cost involved in shipping back a useless item .
