So after reading the reviews of people using this for XB1 storage I decided to try the 1TB spare hard drive I needed, to expand the storage space of the XB1. Pop the hard drive in there, plug it into the USB port on the back of the Xbox One S, hit the power button and it was instantly recognized and formatted to work. One complication: the case's hibernation feature stops the HD, doesn't work, and the Xbox can't wake the HD from hibernation when trying to play a game installed on it. So you have to turn it off, then turn it back on and wait for XB1 to say the external storage is ready. It's not complete noise, just a slight annoyance. I wish there was a way to disable the case's sleep mode, but other than that it's a great, well-built case at a good price.
