Review on Milton 2780-3LH X 3' Leader Hose, 1/2" NPT, 0 by Pablo Rudon

Female end *needs to be tightened down* and doesn’t actually swivel once installed

I’m a big fan of Milton products when it comes to accessories for my pneumatic setup. Primarily because the items are general of high quality, especially for the price, and to a degree because *many* of the products *say* they are made in America (I don’t know how true this is as a recently got 2 1/2” ball valves and the packaging says they were made in Italy, but when you lift the rubber grip up a bit you can see the handle says ‘China’ on it. Could be that the parts are sourced from China and assembled in Italy, but it brings their items provenance into question. At least for me). I like the America bit not only because it means items are usually of higher quality (meaning the overall design is usually better, raw materials are usually better, and hopefully the assembly/QA is better) but also because it’s nice to see companies having a footprint in the US/employing people in the US.I was installing new hard lines and needed some lead-in hoses so I went with Milton as per the usual, expected to be of good quality and the price point is also good. The Swiveling female end was also a key factor as this makes installation easier (the hoses are being used to connect two fixed items).Once they arrived and upon inspection of the hoses everything seemed pretty standard: the fittings looked nice and solid (not some cadmium plated metal to make it look like brass & not super thin either), the hose looks like it’s made of quality rubber (once again based on my experience with various hoses - you can usually tell which blends will probably end up cracking. These seem nice and compliant), so you would think everything is all good!I installed everything, but I had kept in mind the reviews I read about the female swivel bit leaking from other reviews so I figured I should test at least one of the hoses before I button everything down. I had noticed that the adapters that I was able to screw in all the way caused the female adapter to become fixed in place as well so I was a bit curious. Upon pressurizing they hose the adapter started to leak air, especially at low pressures. If you pull in the hose the air stopped leaking and once the pressure was high enough, and if the hose was undisturbed, the air pressure did seal the fitting. However any movement caused a leak.Based on the information provided by Milton in the questions section I was not expecting the fitting to leak at all. In addition I am pretty sure that the NTP standard specified that a full seal is attained through a ‘filler’ between the threads like Teflon tape or pipe dope. I’m not 100% certain, but I’m pretty sure that it doesn’t require fittings to be able to screw in all the way down to the bottom of a fitting & that this is how a seal would be formed. As such I don’t think I can say that one needs to use ‘quality’ fittings only with this hose because this specific quality probably isn’t part of the standard so a fitting from a quality vendor might not meet the criteria necessary to make the seal.As such I think I can only say that you need to make sure that the fittings go all the way down, but can’t say how one can identify those fittings. (however, the cheaper adapter I tried wasn’t long enough and the second adapter that cost more was long enough).

Pros
  • Works great
Cons
  • Leaked at the swivel and right out of the box, rendering it useless. The leak is NOT minor.
