I had a real life lightning damage incident which served as a test of this device in real life conditions. That's what happened. The IP camera protecting this device was damaged (failure) BUT unlike last time the damage was limited to this thing only (success). Last time I also had a broken POE switch and other cameras on a wired network. I only took off one star because there are NO guarantees for lightning and some protection is better than none. Well, to protect myself, I did what you should do: I stuck a real earth rod in the ground and hooked up the 10-ga. no more than 10 feet of cable to this unit. There is no magic in this device - you must have an earth stick or other protection with you. All that energy has to go somewhere. It can't just go away.
