Review on Effortless Control: Westinghouse Lighting 7787500 Wireless Ceiling Fan and Light Wall Control by Randy Montiel

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great ceiling fan upgrade for an old house, but not easy to install.

I have a 94 year old house with 5 old ceiling fans. All had tension chain controls that are difficult to operate in the dark. The Westinghouse remote control kit replaces the wall switch with a transmitter and mounts the receiver inside the fan. To install this system you must turn off the switch and be able to do electrical work on the stairs. Each device has a 4-switch DIP switch (double row housing) that you can set to provide a unique setting for each device. With 4 switches you can control up to 16 fans in your home. I found my house with 5 fans bad. The transmitter is connected like a wall switch and is very intuitive to use. There is a single on/off button for the light, but holding it down acts like a dimmer, switching from low to bright. It remembers its previous setting, but I usually just leave it bright. There are 4 fan buttons - high, medium, low and off. There is also a main power slide switch. The transmitter is AC powered - no battery required. My only complaint is that the transmitter is large and barely fits in the boxes in my old house. The receiver must be installed inside the fan and this depends on the design of the fan. In most cases, you need to turn off the switch, take out the light bulbs and curtains, remove the fan blades, remove the dome on the ceiling, and lower the fan onto the support bracket. You'll probably have to google the fan guides to find out how. The receiver is placed in the room inside the ceiling panel. Two wires connect to the ceiling junction box, and three wires connect to the fan hot, neutral, and light wires. Everything is color coded but an old fan had an unusual headlight wire and I had to take the headlights apart to see which wire to use. Then you pack everything back up, say a little prayer, turn on the breaker and hope for the best. All five blocks worked for me the first time. Before you start, it is best to switch on the light and set the fan to high speed using the pull chains. If you forget it, the device may not appear to work at first, just operate the pull chains and transmitter until everything works. In this case, remove and discard the traction chains. There are many other vendors on Revain that appear to offer identical products. The Westinghouse name was well known and the price was good, especially for a few units. The receivers also work with commercially available hand-held transmitters if you set the DIP switches accordingly. I got rid of 10 traction chains and can now find turnouts at night. I am very happy with these remote controls.
