Review on Experience Superior Quality Visuals with Samsung SyncMaster 920NW 19 Inch Wide Screen 3D Monitor by Brian Dorsey

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Good but not great

I bought this monitor because I wanted a 19 inch widescreen black monitor and it was one of only two monitors I could find anywhere without one of those gaudy glossy black bezels. I don't know what the trend is to make every tech product as shiny as possible, but to me the gloss black look is awful and I wish manufacturers would stop beating it to death and at least give people a regular matte black one offer option. who feel the same way. However, this monitor has the usual matte black bezel which looks great. In terms of performance, he does his job very well. The image is sharp and looks sharp from a variety of viewing angles. I only have two complaints about this monitor. One is a matter of personal preference and the other is an inevitable side effect of using higher resolutions. First, the native resolution for this device is 1440 x 900. This makes the image sharp, but on the tiny side. It's not so small that it's a big problem, but it's smaller than I would have liked. Unfortunately none of the other resolutions can be used as they all result in the image being stretched or distorted. So while 1440 x 900 works well, it will more or less be your only option and you'll have to live with smaller image and text sizes. Interestingly, the included instructions suggest setting the monitor to 1152 x 864, even though that's NOT the advertised native resolution. While this resolution ALMOST works, it doesn't really fit. You end up with larger text and decently sized icons, but the text looks a bit blocky and stretched out, which I couldn't get used to. I finally settled on the native resolution and dealt with things that were slightly smaller. Another small issue is that some of the lower quality images and videos that looked fine on my previous monitor now look pixelated and blocky. This appears to be due to the fact that viewing lower resolution images on high resolution screens actually introduces pixelation that may not have been visible before. However, it is difficult to counteract this with a monitor as the same problem would occur on any higher resolution screen. Overall this is a very good monitor with excellent imaging but it does have a few flaws/minor annoyances that prevent me from giving it a higher rating.

Pros
  • ‎SAMSUNG
Cons
  • Bad viewing angles. Poor viewing angles can cause the display to appear distorted or blurry when viewed from the side or at an angle.
