A Journey to a Wet Shave: Viking Volcano vs. Mercury 23C

Like any good story, it needs a good beginning. My journey to wet shaving started with that horrible Gillette ad. I have been a long time Gillette customer for many years and purchase their razors and gels. I have never been so offended by an ad and will not support your radical SJW campaign. So first I look at their competitors like Schick or Dollar Shave Club. When I did a little research on the history of the most bladed cartridge. For years I suffered from terrible acne and ingrown hairs. I also thought it was hygiene or I wasn't changing blades often enough. But no matter what I do, they never go away. What good is a close shave if you have a huge cyst on your face or neck? Then I found out that multi-bladed cartridges work by pulling the hair out of the follicle and then trimming it. Which leads to ingrown hairs, and it all made sense. After that I decided to switch completely from Multi to DE. I look at several brands on Revain and chose Vikings because to be honest I liked the look and I love Vikings. I bought a Vikings coaster, bowl and brush. At first I was a bit disappointed with the knife. So I wanted to try Merkur 23c, the most popular DE on Revain. I thought maybe the DE Vikings just give up. But in the end I loved the Vikings more than Mercury and sent him back. In this review they are compared. For the purposes of this review, I would like to state that I have used Merkur blades in both Vikings DE and Merkur. Astra, Feather and Merkur just make blades better than Vikings, maybe that will change in the future but for now my money goes to the strongest. I use Taylor of Old Bond Steet Sandalwood shaving cream, mousse, pre-shave oil and after-shave balm. The first thing that will strike you when comparing the Vulcan to the Marker 23c is that the Vulcan is much larger and much heavier than the Marker. For me that's a big plus, it's much easier to shave like this because you don't have to press hard on the blade. You let the Vulcan's weight do it for you. This is clearly a winning feature. Another really important feature that puts the Vulcan above at least the Merkur 23c is the butterfly function. With the Vulcan DE, to change the blade, all you have to do is unscrew the base and the razor head pops open. Changing the blade takes less than 5 seconds. The Merkur 23c comes in three parts and no matter how many videos I've watched or what technique I have, changing the blade isn't easy. DE blades are much sharper than anything most people touch. I cut myself pretty badly while changing the Merkur 23c and it hurt for a whole week. With a butterfly head, you simply don't have that risk. Finally and most importantly, how well she shaves. I would like to emphasize that Mercury gives a good shave, especially for beginners. But Vulcan DE wins for me because it's a more aggressive shave. If you compare Vulcan to Mercury, you will find that Mercury has a much longer defense. The great thing is that it's a lot harder to cut or cut yourself this way. The gap between blade and guard is much smaller. While Vulcan's guard is much shorter and the gap is much larger. This leaves the blade much more open and a smoother shave. I often found that I shaved Mercury first and couldn't get a clean shave. Whereas you could just land at Vulcan and catch up on what Mercury missed. So both Vikings Vulcan and Merkur 23c are good razors. But I like a more aggressive shave that makes my face as smooth as a baby's bottom. So if you're a beginner and don't want to try something like the extremely aggressive Muhle R41, then this is the razor for you. With time and methods, you will be able to get rid of cuts and get a very close shave.
