I fly Cessna 150, 172 and 182 so it's quite noisy in the cockpit (for me). For the past year, I've only used my Lightspeed Sierra headset while flying, but I didn't want to spend more than $600 on additional headsets. I didn't want to spend a lot of money so I decided to give it a try. I have now bought them for passenger use as I fly with other people more often. I was really impressed with them considering their price! Now for the rating: Noise Cancellation: 4.5 stars. They don't match my Lightspeed, but for 1/6 the price they're really good. It's fine if your plane has good sun visors and you don't need sunglasses, but I certainly thought it was worth mentioning. I bought a $320 David Clark headset that was similar to this ASA headset (PNR, no frills) but was returned. This after only 2 flights. This ASA headset is much better at a third of the price. Sound quality: These things are impressive! Very impressive. For $115 I am shocked by the sound quality. They sound as good if not better than my Lightspeeds (perhaps due to Lightspeed's ANR/negative noise). But with this headset everything is crystal clear, even music playing over the dashboard. Microphone: 5 stars Really impressive here too. The headset I received is actually the "HS-1a" as shown in the photo (it has a flexible boom arm). I installed the foam microphone cover (included). This mic is better than the Lightspeed mic! It turns on when I start speaking, stops when I speak, and doesn't miss a thing. This actually leads me to believe that something is wrong with my Lightspeed because the ASA mic works so flawlessly while my LS mic sometimes doesn't pick up/transmit what I'm saying. But there are no complaints about the ASA microphone. Comfort: 4.5 stars. After reading everything on the other reviews before buying, I was concerned that the clamping force is too much since my head is a bit big. After unwrapping the headset, I put it on and then stretched it out about an inch wider than either of my ears and held it there for a few seconds. It only took a minute and definitely eliminated the excessive clamping force of the headset. If you have a large dome like me, I highly recommend stretching the headset a bit beforehand. The top cover is good. I'm bald so I don't have hair to soften the top of the headset so I can feel the difference between the top pad and my LSs. But to be honest it wasn't even noticeable after the first 5 minutes or so. It's not plush like the LS, but comfortable enough. My longest flight to date with this product is just over 2 hours and I haven't had any problems or pain. on the. Independent controls are good, although I don't need/prefer different volume levels in my headset. The length of the cord - seemed quite short at first, but turned out to be quite long once I got on the plane. I suspect that my LS only has a very long cable. Space for a flight bag - This headset doesn't pack as easily as my LS, but that's to be expected. All I had to do was remove the Velcro divider from the case, rotate the headphones 90* and pack them up. No big deal, just add a few seconds before and after the flight. Appearance - This headset looks great. I really like the all black look. I'm aware that this is a budget headset, but none of my passengers can say so. So for the price, this headset really can't be beat. I just ordered 2 more so I finally have a full set of 4 headphones. These things put David Clarke to shame.
