This is definitely a thick and heavy leash - for a large strong dog (which I have) this is a strong leash and the shorter length helps with that prevent prevents the dog from getting into a strong pull position in front of the walker. It is quite heavy and hard, typical of the skin; I expect it to become more pliable over time, but it will always be heavy. When it arrived it also smelled quite badly (leather stain I think); I had to hang it outside for a few days. The clip is solid but I don't like the bolt opening as I prefer a spring style that can be quickly attached to a dog's collar. I also wish it had a metal ring next to the handle so I can attach accessories to it (a mini flashlight for my pre-dawn walks). If you really want a leather leash I think this is a good contender. I thought I wanted one but actually I prefer a cotton webbing leash.
