Review on πŸ”§ OWON B35T Plus Multimeter – True RMS Measurement, Bluetooth BLE 4.0 (Android & iOS), & Offline Data Recording by Luckie Davidson

Revainrating 2 out of 5

The multimeter works great, the bluetooth app is nice - just watch out for the app permission settings!

I've used this for all sorts of electrical projects and diagnosing issues with my SUV, but oddly the most commonly used function is the temperature function which I can use over bluetooth and watch the temperature on an app on my phone (as seen in the screenshots), which even allows me to view the chart (which works for all functions, not just temperature). The three issues I have with this thing are: 1) The app you're installing needs to be installed from a third-party site (not the app store), which is a bit of a concern since security isn't guaranteed by third-party sources becomes. 2) The application asks for some permissions that are not suitable for the multimeter. It asks for access to your storage (to save log/graph data, hopefully no more), bluetooth, phone, contacts, and your GPS location. With phone/contacts/GPS permissions disabled, the app throws some TTS errors when opened, although everything seems to be working fine aside from these ambiguous errors. These permissions, or the application logic that requires them, are not listed anywhere on the website that I could find, or anywhere in the manual. Very sketchy 3) Temperature resolution as it doesn't see anything between integer temperatures (so it sees 99 and 100 but not 99.5 like most thermocouples). Although the app adds 0.0 at the end of each temperature. So that's a little misleading. So if you want to use the app, make sure you turn off the sketchy permissions it asks for access to! Update: Downgrading my rating. I just got a new phone and installed the latest bluetooth connection software. Now the app doesn't work unless I turn on GPS and give the app access to my GPS and contact list. In the old version I could disable these two and got an error message, but everything worked fine. Now it just throws a warning and doesn't work (screenshot added). What a schematic app update. Why does the multimeter need my contacts or my GPS location?

Pros
  • Lots of positive vibes
Cons
  • No power
