Bolt/nut, but I think that's just due to the shape of the roofline on my '98 Montero. It's very steep and high compared to most gutter cars, so there's little to no room to stick your fingers or a wrench behind the surco mount to secure it. But I can't fault Surco for that as they are designed for general use.
