I can't tell you how many adapters I've tried! My SSD was upgraded a few years ago so my early 2011 Macbook Pro runs like a new computer. Instead, I wanted to use a larger external monitor, so finding an adapter was a hassle. I kept buying Mini Displayport (Thunderbolt) for HDMI and they either worked for a few minutes and then shut down or none of them worked. I assume it has to be Mini Displayport to VGA for it to work?! It works perfectly and I am so thankful! I also use a widescreen Dell external monitor and it works great.
