SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED

As I type, I am surrounded by busy books! I have three here next to me and another five I've already reviewed. Busy books will work well in our PreK ESE classroom but are also excellent for home use. This is my first foray into busy books, and there is a steep learning curve. Here are some things I discovered:MAGNETIC vs. THE ONES YOU DON'T WANTWell, I titled that pretty clearly! The sole magnetic one next to me is by far the easiest to use. It comes ready straight out of the box. All of the others come with little round velcro tabs. It is up to the parent to position these very many tiny velcro tabs on the many pages and very many small pieces which come with each book. You definitely want magnetic. I will add that one of the books comes with unbound pages and pieces which need to be punched out; pretty much all of the work is on the parent.MADE IN CHINAIt's pretty clear that all of these busy books are made in China. I leafed through every busy book checking for spelling errors; there were none. But there were some odd phrasings. Trapezium instead of trapezoid. An arrow pointing to a cheek but labeled "face”; that occurred in nearly all of the books. But most of the awkward phrasings will not be readable by your toddler or preschooler anyway.TRACINGThe alphabet tracing pages invariably have much smaller letters than you would expect to find in a tracing book.ENGAGEMENTThey all feature bright colorful engaging pages. And there are a great many pages per book. Any of these busy books will keep your child busy for some time.SMALL PIECESPar for the course. Just be aware.ACCESSORIESThey all come with bags to store everything and with erasable markers. Accessories are virtually identical.MY THOUGHTS ON THIS SPECIFIC BUSY BOOKGood busy book but expect to put in some time with those aforementioned velcro dots! This book is even more work than most because you also have to punch out the smaller pieces.
