My hair was at its prettiest dark brown/black when I was 20 years old. Now in my early 40s, gray hair is slowly but surely taking its place in my natural hair. Although they are known as "Threads of Wisdom", I hate them! I bought this product in Oriental Black #59 just to cover gray hair. With others it's not even very noticeable, with me they were grey. I hated parting in the middle of my natural hair because the gray strands were showing. And yes, I went the natural "herbal route" (as others have mentioned in these reviews), I've tried the herbal henna + indigo formula several times. But when you rock your natural hair/curls you will tend to wash, condition and use oils in it more often than a non-natural hair person. This will cause the indigo (which makes the hair "temporarily black") to fade faster. My gray hair is revealed again within a week of using my hair products and oils in my henna + indigo treated hair. And nobody wants to keep applying herbal hair color 2 or 3 times a month because it tarnishes so easily after washing or applying hair products and oils. So the only reliable way to disguise gray hair is to use permanent hair dye/hair dye on top. Sorry but that's the only way because I've tried both methods: herbal and now permanent hair color. You can't sleep with this hair color. I've seen it in cosmetic stores my whole life. I never thought I would use it later in my life to cover my gray hair. It's easy to mix (just add water as directed) and it doesn't contain ammonia or peroxide, so it doesn't even smell like chemicals. It's a dark color so it doesn't wash the color out of the hair (like lightening hair does which sometimes causes breakage), it adds color so it's less harsh. I was more than satisfied after the first application. This permanent hair color effortlessly covers my gray hair, even short strands on the edges of my head and long strands within 20 minutes (no burning or irritation during application). And the best thing about permanent hair color is that I can apply both my hair products and hair oil without worrying about my hair color fading and my gray hair being "re-exposed". This color is beyond amazing. Of course, I would recommend it to anyone looking to conceal stubborn, hard-to-paint gray hair like mine. Just make sure you do an allergy test first. IMPORTANT NOTE. I did an allergy test on my skin before first use. Always do an allergy test before coloring your hair, regardless of the brand.
