I ended up borrowing a friend's camcorder and all my tapes played just fine. Therefore

The camera did not work properly. All playable tapes, including those left in the camcorder by the seller, skipped during playback. I ended up borrowing a friend's camcorder and all my tapes played just fine. So I have to conclude that this particular camcorder was defective. I hope the seller will refund my money for the purchase.
