Review on LG 24In Ultrafine IPS 38X21 120Hz Frameless Monitor (Model: 24MD4KLB-B) - Unmatched Display Clarity and Sleek Design by Stephen Beal

The densest monitor for a Mac laptop, but it takes a trick to run at native resolution

Like the monitor. My configuration is a 2019 Macbook Pro 16 with a dual display with an integrated monitor and an LG monitor. I can make the fonts so small that I need a magnifying glass and they're still legible on both monitors. Sharpness like a retina display. BUT I had monitor resolution issues ON THE MBP MONITOR after upgrading to Big Sur (MBP 16 of 2019). It may have been happening to Catalina for months and I didn't notice, but I couldn't see the native permissions. More like what I'm used to from Mojave. I'm used to very small font sizes and lots of free space, but I have the option to choose a screen size that's at least 50% smaller than what I'm used to. RDM to the rescue! After a very simple download and "build" I can now move less than I would like. Anyway, RDM worked for me. Against common sense, the native resolution of my new external LG 4K display was built into the Big Sur. But you must use the "secret" option - click the zoom button to see the original resolution. Related backstory: I used an LG 5K Ultrafine Repack and it broke after a year. The Asurion product insurance I purchased reimbursed the full price. This time I went with the 4K version because I heard that the bandwidth is limited to 5K when using the monitor as a USB-C hub. And every once in a while I've had weird issues with whatever I put in the back of the 5K monitor, like weird network errors (when plugged in. So rework 4K. So far so good after a month.

Pros
  • If using with an eGPU, make sure your cable is "bi-directional".
Cons
  • The monitor backlight is too bright.
