I have never used or bought a contoured memory gel orthopedic pillow as I have always used and bought traditional bed pillows but decided to try this after experiencing neck pain from empty pillows and poor sitting posture after straining my neck for hours while staring at a computer. The pillow is packed in a compressed box; It expands when unpacked. Allow at least 24-48 hours for it to "air out" and fully expand before use. I have mine in a pillow case. Some reviews mention that the pillow is soft but I find the pillow too hard for my liking and after a week of use it's still firm rather than soft. Maybe I don't have a heavy head :) or maybe I'm just not used to memory foam pillows; Anyway, I'm used to it. My advice is to give it a try and see if this type of pillow suits your needs/application. I know my wife and kids still prefer regular pillows after trying it.
