These are great winter pants and you can tell the designers have done a great job! The trousers have a wide cut so that base layers can also be worn underneath. There are Velcro straps at the waist that tighten the belt a bit. My 4 year old wears pants from 4t to 5t and size xxs fits him well but is not too big. The leg ends are reinforced to prevent the pants from ripping when they are a bit longer and the pants have a Columbia Outgrown feature that allows you to extend the leg length as your child grows. If my little one doesn't have a major growth spurt, I can well imagine him wearing these pants again next season. He rolled in the snow, made snow angels and sleds and stayed perfectly dry and warm. The only thing I miss is the velcro that fits snugly around the ankle, but they fit well on big snow or ski boots.
