Great fun and exercise in patience for kids
Sometimes, good things take time. This crystal growing kits is reasonably simple and hazard-free. I did it with my 4 year old daughter and she was interested enough in the process to participate. It takes several days to grow the crystals once started (but I left them for a week to make sure they grew substantially).
