Review on Rosewill RCR-IC001 USB 2.0 3.5-Inch Internal Card Reader & USB Port with Extra Silver Face Plate (RCR-IC001) by Bud Crabtree

Very slow ports for card readers

I have tried several times to write a detailed review of this product but Revain refuses to write a review. I don't know why, everything is in the manual. Instead, I'll summarize why this device sucks and skip a few good points. First of all, all of the card reader slots on this hub are USB 2.0. This makes this reader extremely slow compared to other USB 3.0 card readers. Reading from a class 10 card offers a reading speed of no more than 20 Mbit/s. Comparing the same card with a USB 3.0 reader reveals speeds of up to 90Mbps. Other quality issues include short cables, too short to be used in anything other than a short tower case, or if you don't mind cables dangling from CPU fans. The front panel is cheap and nothing more than holes over the connectors. For example, the CF reader is a set of pins, 10mm inside the device, with no guides to feed the card through and into the pin socket. Also the USB ports feel just as cheap as the plugs could fall out or break. I returned my device due to poor performance and clumsy implementation.

Pros
  • fingers crossed
Cons
  • sad packaging
