Noise, slow performance, buggy, etc.

Terrible annoying vibrations when your head is searching . A louder (faster spinning) drive would mask that noise a bit, but this drive, while otherwise quiet, really punches you in the face with the noise when the drive is active. Technically this thing is completely silent, but attach it to the case and the vibration turns it into a speaker that amplifies head noise. You really need to install some suspension with foam or something. Performance is good at first, then becomes terribly, terribly slow for long periods of idle time before returning to normal speed. I traced this to a program that measures the hard drive temperature. Either there is something wrong with the drive electronics or it is so weak that requesting this SMART data when the drive is quite busy reading/writing will cause the drive to freeze for a few minutes. It's awful and I haven't had any problems with other brands of discs. The read/write performance is rather disappointing. An 8TB WD Red drive (also not "professional") reads/writes 33% faster than this 8TB Segate at the same speed. It's not a small difference, it's a huge bottleneck when backing up or restoring your data. I would be fine with that if it weren't for all the other issues. The warranty conditions are also pretty bad. Not only is it a 2 year warranty, there are also strict limits on the amount of data you can read/write on your drive during the warranty period. If you back up your drive frequently, or regularly zero/erase it to wipe data securely or similar, your warranty may be voided much sooner without good reason. And you only find out after you've paid to have your CD shipped back to them. And for all these shortcomings. Seagate drives are barely cheaper than WD drives. I have nothing to do with WD or Seagate. I preferred Seagate drives years ago, but they really seem to have given up and fallen behind their main competitors. Even when I had problems with WD drives and decided to try Seagate again, I found that they only got worse over time. AVOID!

Pros
  • Accelerate desktop and laptop applications with an internal SSD that delivers blazing fast read/write speeds of up to 3400/3000MB/s
Cons
  • Low maintainability
