Magic, just magic.: Camera and photo

Some people will give this camera an excellent rating because this is their first truly professional camera, but believe me it's good for those of us who used to own professional organizations. I've been shooting professionally since 2004. I had 1Ds, 1Ds-II, 1Ds-III, D3, D3s, D810, others. So I'm not impressed just because it's a professional case. However, I liked the Nikon D3s so much that I used (and still own) them from 2009 to 2017, which isn't to say I'm just a gear freak. I can't compare it to D4 or D4s because I missed them. Anyway, let me summarize. AFI was used to the amazing 51-point autofocus system that came with the Nikon D3s. It was revolutionary, and I understand it didn't get much better in D4 or D4s, so I waited. Now D5 has 153, three times more! 3 times better, no. but it's better, and not just slightly, it's REALLY GOOD. It rarely misses, but when it does, it's not far and usually produces a usable 5x7 size. What's even better is that it can do this in near-zero light, 'moonlight' as they say, but I get sharp autofocus in what I'd call pitch black darkness. I prefer to shoot in natural light (no flash) and this camera can auto focus in any situation. It's difficult to quantify these things. My conclusion is that it offers a much higher hit rate than the already amazing D3 and it does so in near zero light. 12mp When you scale the D5 down to 12-megapixels, it looks a lot cleaner than the D3s. Compared to D810 there is no comparison. The D810 isn't bad given the amount of data it collects, but even if you upscale the D810's 36-megapixel image to 20 or even 12-megapixels, it doesn't look as clean as the D5 or D3s. Although IMHO still very clean and not a bad choice for low light - just not the best choice. I find the D3, D810 and D5 phenomenal up to around ISO 1600. D810 can be used but D3 and D5 are still very clean up to 6400. At 12800+ D5 seems to be about 1/2 step ahead of D3 in noise when viewing every pixel 100% or maybe 1.5 steps forward if you lower D5 to 12MP. Where the D5 really differs from the D3s is that after 25600 IMO the D3s can only be used in black and white, although the D5 when scaled down to 8 or 10 megapixels can do color at ISO 102400 or Instagram photos at 204 800 can be used D5 starts to get a color cast at ISO 400k, then I should shoot in black and white. But to be able to shoot in extremely low light at ISO 400k and actually have something to hang on the wall (black and white) is amazing, magical. Dynamic range First let me say that the D810 is better, yes it is. when recovering highlights or deep dark shadows at bright ISO like 64-800, but above 800 D5 stays the same, and above ISO 800 D5, D810 starts to outperform in highlight and shadow recovery. So it's a matter of taste. IMO low ISO shots are for studios and landscapes. In these situations, you can enhance your shot with highlights or bracketing and don't have to restore highlights or shadows (although that's handy). I shoot above ISO 800 almost exclusively and this is where the D5 is like magic, yes there is noise but to be able to recover 2.5-3 shades of shadows at ISO 6400 is pretty damn impressive! Speed: The D3s was already fast enough for me with 9 or 11 fps. 14 only a whirlwind eats a memory card. It's great if you're shooting handheld in bracketed shots (which you shouldn't) or if you're shooting kids. One of the 50 photos you just took is sure to have a bright smile ;) Ergonomics and weather protection: as good or better than D3, they are almost identical. One complaint I thought they'd already fixed was the custom button assignments. I still can't assign any function to any button. As if they annoy me. Why? I only want to assign Auto ISO to this button for that rare moment when I need to capture something in a split second. No, I can not. Stupid Nikon. The touchscreen is pretty cool, although I'd buy a camera even if there wasn't one. I love being able to pinch, zoom and slide while zooming to make sure no one blinks, or double checking that the D5 is indeed perfectly focused. Wow. I could go on, there's a lot to love.
