Not working

Bought this cable to connect an Asus ZenDrive (optical CD/DVD drive) to a new 13" M1 MacBook Pro (which only has USB-C ports). The cable doesn't work The MacBook does not mount the Asus drive - in other words, it is not visible in Finder, Disk Utility or any other application.I have used this ZenDrive with a 2016 MacBook (USB 3.0 ports) for a number of years and it works fine.Apple support - as usual - has no answers.
